We all have that one friend that can eat all day long without ever gaining a pound, while the rest of us gain weight just by looking at food. This can definitely be discouraging and while you may think it’s time to hang up your gym clothes or throw in the towel, the experts say think again! These issues can be a result of slow metabolism, and even if you weren’t born with extreme metabolism built into your genetic makeup, like your friend over there, there is still hope!

How to Boost Your Metabolism

EVERYONE HAS THE POWER TO INCREASE HIS OR HER METABOLISM. What makes your metabolism so important? To put it simply, metabolism is the body’s process of breaking down proteins, carbs and fat into the energy that it needs. Your metabolic rate is effected by the number of consumed calories, the number of calories burned while eating and exercising, and your genetic makeup. So the question many people are asking is, “How can I increase my metabolism?” Well, unfortunately there isn’t much you can do about the genes you were born with. Don’t let this stress you too much though, your genes account for only 5 percent of your daily calorie burn. This means the best way to step up your metabolic rate is to increase your body’s need for energy. Among the best ways to increase your metabolism is exercise. Aerobic exercise burns more calories short term and weight training builds and/or maintains muscle that will boost metabolism in the long run.

Since muscle burns more calories than fat, the more muscle you have the higher your resting metabolic rate. One pound of muscle burns 35 calories a day, while one pound of fat burns two calories a day. Your best bet for keeping your metabolic rate revved up is to build muscle, participate in regular cardio/aerobic exercise, snack on low calorie, high protein foods, and strive for an active lifestyle!
