BURPEES! As a personal trainer, when I say this word during a session or class I usually tend to get the “evil eye” from my clients or even maybe a few nasty words under their breathe. Haha!! Well, I promise I’m only doing it to BENEFIT them!!! Seriously!! The Burpee is one of the best exercises out there that incorporates the entire body. It is a 6 count body weight movement that strengthens several muscle groups, helps build endurance & improves coordination. It is the ultimate example of functional fitness. Not only will it help you meet weight loss goals, it also helps improve the performance of everyday activities such as carrying groceries, lifting a suitcase overhead on the airplane, playing with your kids and so on.
As you perform a Burpee, you are engaging your arms, chest, quads, glutes, hamstrings & core muscles. As you are doing this exercise, you are strengthening these muscles with your own body weight. There is no weight required for the Burpee so you pretty much can perform them anywhere. You can do them at home, the gym, while you are at your kids’ sport practices or even on break at work. So really there are no excuses to throw in a few burpees a day, right?
Want to improve your stamina and endurance?? Incorporate Burpees in your workout! They get your heart rate up very quickly as you are strengthening several muscle groups. We all know that when your heart rate goes up, you burn calories so this this makes for a great fat burning addition to any workout! Challenge yourself by completing a certain amount of burpees and adding more weekly to your workout. This will help increase your endurance, improve your workouts & daily activities.
Coordination is substantial in this 6 count movement exercise. The good thing is, you can do the burpee as slow or fast as you want. You are in control & can modify as you please. First time doing a burpee, make sure you hit each count at a slow pace, then you can add speed as you need or want. As you get better at the BURPEE, advance it to make it more challenging for you. Add more movement to it by incorporating another count. Try adding extra pushups, dumb bell weights, squat jumps, weight exercises & more. The Burpee is ever changing! You can be as creative as you want with it!
The BURPEE…does it sound so bad now??? Next time you hear that word out of your trainer’s mouth think of ALL the BENEFITS you are getting out of this ultimate functional exercise. You are strengthening the entire body, improving endurance & coordination all in one!!!!
