How To Reduce Lower Back Pain

Lower back pain is common among adults and is often caused by overuse, muscle strain, or injury. Staying active and avoiding extended periods of time in certain positions, such as sitting, can reduce lower back pain. Most people that have pain in their lower back naturally feel better when they change positions throughout the day, specifically switching between sitting and standing positions. Some feel more relief when they switch to a sitting position, while others feel better when they are standing. Those who feel better when sitting may get relief from exercises that bring the knees closer to the chest such as a sit up or a standing hamstring stretch. Those who feel better when standing may feel relief by doing exercises that push the hips forward for example, a bridge, hip flexor stretch, or a bird dog (starting on the hands and knees with the alternate arm and leg reaching out).

Some type of aerobic exercise may also help alleviate some pain. Aerobic exercises cause your heart and other muscles to use oxygen more efficiently and muscles that receive oxygen-rich blood stay healthier. Participating in certain exercises and staying active can help speed your recovery time if you have recently experience a back injury. Consistently stretching and strengthening your stomach, back, and legs will help make them less susceptible to injury. Strong stomach, back, and leg muscles will also give your spine more support, which will reduce the pressure on your spinal discs.

It is important that you don’t let fear of pain keep you from being active. Becoming more active soon after noticing pain will help strengthen your muscles and reduce the chances of the pain growing. Too little activity can cause loss of flexibility, strength, and endurance, which will then cause more pain.
