Rockwall Gym Explores Research that Links Sleep and Exercise

by studiofit

There are numerous known benefits of regular exercise. Some of these include lowering the risk of disease, reducing stress and anxiety levels, increasing a person’s energy level and improving a person’s emotional state. According to recent research, it has been found that a consistent exercise routine can also lead to an improvement in sleep patterns over a period of time.

Studies suggest that daily exercise improves sleep quality. Receiving at least seven hours of sleep per night is important to a person’s productivity, mood and overall health. Quality sleep can protect a person’s mental and physical health as well as his or her quality of life and safety. Sleep deficiency can have a negative effect on how well a person can think, react, work, learn and get along with others. During sleep, the body is working to support healthy brain function and maintain its physical health.

Some research suggests that when insomnia patients added moderate exercise to their daily routines, they experienced less anxiety and got more sleep at night. It has been found that teenage athletes reported better sleep patterns and were more alert during the day than their peers who exercised significantly less. The research has also proven that moderate exercise helped improve the sleeping habits in the normally sedentary elderly.

The relationship between exercise and sleep quality depends on factors such as the intensity of exercise as well as the time of day of a workout. One study found that the participants who exercised in the afternoon reported fewer disruptions in sleep than those people who exercised in the morning. It is also believed by some researchers that a moderate level of physical activity at least six hours before bedtime can improve a person’s sleep quality.

It may take some time for a new exercise routine to show any big changes in a person’s sleep patterns. However, the evidence points to a positive link between a more active lifestyle and an improvement in sleep quality. An increase in sleep quality will in turn provide a significant increase in a person’s health and well-being.

A big thank you to Jim Floyd, my trainer for a decade, for convincing me that just because I can, doesn't mean I should bench press 400 lbs. Ego and 57-year-old joints don't always get along!
